Small, familiar birds at first, the kind any pet shop sells, wooden perches and granular bedding, and then, deeper in, water, and one bird that plainly was never meant for a bedroom cage.

Perch after perch

The yellow accumulates first: canaries lined up on a wooden perch [1], more of them in what looks like a breeder's setup [2]. Then the company widens, three cockatiels resting shoulder to shoulder [3], zebra finches behind metal wire [4], a pair of small colourful birds sharing a cage [5], three songbirds on their perches over the bedding [6].
